Ny Ursae Majoris ( ν UMa for short ) is a double star in the constellation Great Bear . The central star is a giant of the spectral class K3 and has an apparent magnitude of 3.5 mag. The system is around 400 light years from the sun . The angular distance of the companion is around 7 arc seconds.

The star bears the historical proper name Alula Borealis .

The IAU has the historical proper names on July 20, 2016 Alula Borealis defined as standardized proper names. It is pointed out, however, that this proper name is only valid for the visually lighter component A. The visually weaker star of this binary system therefore has no proper name (yet).
