Nyctinomops is a genus from the family of bulldog bats (Molossidae), whose representatives are native to North and South America.
description
Representatives of the genus Nyctinomops have a head-trunk length of 54 to 84 mm, a tail length of 34 to 57 and a forearm length of 41 to 64 mm. The coat color is brown to reddish, with the belly usually being lighter. The animals of this genus differ from the Mexican bulldog bat ( Tadarida brasiliensis ) by the narrower snout, the absence of the third lower incisor and the connected instead of separate ears.
Way of life
Nyctinomops species, like most bats, are nocturnal and feed on insects. They spend the day in crevices and buildings. They are less sociable than the Mexican bulldog bat and mother colonies rarely reach sizes of over 100 individuals. The males are considered solitary.
Types and distribution
A distinction is made between four types, the German names follow TCH Cole:

- Pocket cantilever bat ( Nyctinomops femorosaccus ) ( Merriam , 1899) - Native to the southern United States and Mexico .
- Broad-eared bat ( Nyctinomops laticaudatus ) ( Geoffroy , 1805) - Native to Mexico to Uruguay and Cuba . Incorrectly called Tadarida espiritosantensis or Nyctinomops laticaudata .
- Greater free- tailed bat ( Nyctinomops macrotis ) ( Gray , 1839) - Native to the southern United States to Argentina . Incorrectly called Tadarida molossa .
All species are classified as safe by the IUCN .
