The peale cantilever bat ( Nyctinomops aurispinosus ) is a bat species from the bulldog bat family , which is native to North and South America. The name is made up of the Greek Nyctinomops (means something like "animal that eats at night") and the Latin auris (= "ear") and spinosus (= "thorny"). A synonym is Tadarida aurispinosa (note the feminine Latin ending for this genus).
description
The peale free-tailed bat is much smaller than the great free- tailed bat ( Nyctinomops macrotis ), but larger than the broad-eared bat ( Nyctinomops laticaudatus ) and the pocket free- tailed bat ( Nyctinomops femorosaccus ). The overall length is 111 mm on average, the forearm length 48–52 mm, and the weight 17.0–18.9 g. The coat color is usually dark brown, but varies from reddish to greyish brown. The belly is paler than the back. The hair on the back side is about 4mm long and tricolor, with an almost white base. The ears are large and connected at the base like the other three members of the genus Nyctinomops .
Way of life
Little is known about Nycticeius humeralis; the species is considered rare. Like most bats, it is nocturnal and feeds mainly on insects with soft bodies, such as moths . During the day the animals hide in caves and crevices, where they are often seen together with the more common sister species N. laticaudatus . Nycticeius humeralis is considered to be a bat species that is preferred in the lowlands. Each female gives birth to a single young in spring.
distribution and habitat
Nycticeius humeralis is native to three different, unrelated areas: 1.) in Mexico , 2.) in Venezuela , Colombia , Ecuador and Peru , and 3.) on the east coast of Brazil . The species is classified as harmless by the IUCN thanks to its wide distribution.
