Oaxtepec is a small town in the municipality of Yautepec in the northern part of the Mexican state of Morelos with 6939 inhabitants (2010).
The origin of the name
Your name comes from the Nahuatl language and is made up of two roots : huax and tepec . Huaxin describes a species of tree belonging to the genus of the acacia , known in Mexico as guaje and bearing the Latin name Leucaena esculenta . Tepetl refers to a hill or mountain. Oaxtepec or Huaxtepec , as the city was originally called, means 'Guaje Mountain' or 'Mountain of the Guaje Trees'.
history
What was then Huaxtepec was an important settlement even before the arrival of the Spanish invaders in 1521. In this region lived the Aztec tribe of the Tlahuica , whose largest cities were Cuauhnahuac (today's Cuernavaca ) and Huaxtepec.
In Huaxtepec, the Tlahuica were already cultivating cocoa plants and vanilla at that time . Its splendor impressed the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés so much that he let his King Charles V know that the Moctezuma Gardens in Huaxtepec were the most beautiful he had ever seen.
Soccer
Between 1982 and 1984, the city was represented by CF Oaxtepec for two seasons in the Primera División , the highest league in Mexican club football.
