Upper gate

The Obere Tor in the main street of the city of Merkendorf in the Franconian Lake District ( Middle Franconia ) is part of the city fortifications .

construction

The Upper Gate is a two-story building with a mansard roof and its core dates back to the 15th century. Like the Lower Gate and the Pocket Gate, it was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century . Like the other gates in Merkendorf , the gate had a gatehouse , which was demolished in the middle of the 20th century due to the heavy traffic in order to break a pedestrian passage through the city wall.

In the gate there is an apartment that the city rents and in which the city tower used to live. The upper gate is adjacent to the former Latin school .
