The Heilbronn trolleybus was the trolleybus operator of the city of Heilbronn . It existed from 1951 to 1960 and partially replaced the Heilbronn tram that opened in 1897 and closed in 1955 . The transport company responsible was the Heilbronn public transport company , which has been operating the bus service in Heilbronn since 1948 . Before that, the Gleislose Bahn Heilbronn – Böckingen , an early trolleybus operation that existed from 1911 to 1916, was operating in the city .

history

The Heilbronn tram suffered severe damage in the Second World War , and in the post-war period it was partially restored only temporarily - large parts of the network and the vehicles were in poor condition. The continuation of the Neckar canalization required the construction of a bridge to Böckingen from 1949 , which in turn would have meant a change in the route of the Böckingen tram line. After calculations of economic efficiency, it was decided to serve Böckingen with trolleybuses in the future, because this meant that no new track was needed and the new trolleybus mode of transport could partially continue to use the existing tramway infrastructure. Further plans included a trolleybus route to Frankenbach , which failed due to the failure to upgrade the road there, so that in 1950 it was decided to convert the Sontheim route to trolleybus operation in order to use the trolleybuses already ordered for the Frankenbach route . The renovation of the tram to Böckingen would have cost 1.5 million D-Marks, the establishment of the trolleybus operation, on the other hand, was estimated at only 1.1 million D-Marks.

In 1951 the first routes were converted for trolleybus operation. On September 20, 1951, two trolleybus lines finally started operating . Line 20 ran from the Allee to Böckingen, the amplifier line 21 supplemented the main line between Allee and Sun Well.

From December 1951, the operation of tram line 5, which originally ran from Sülmertor to Sontheim, was shortened to Gildenstraße and the southern section to Sontheim was also converted. There the trolleybuses drove a block loop on Horkheimer Straße, Lutzstraße, Quellenstraße and Hauptstraße. In this context, lines 20 and 21 were expanded from radial lines to diameter lines , although not all courses on amplifier line 21 went to Sontheim.

In the first half of 1952, the intermediate terminus at Sun Wells was given up, so line 21 temporarily served the same route as line 20.

In 1953 the network was expanded between the Sun Well and the Haselter settlement belonging to Böckingen. The new all-day line 22, which replaced the previous supplementary line 21, took over the operation of the new line. From now on, the center of Böckingen was again served by line 20 alone. With this, the Heilbronn trolleybus network had reached its greatest extent, it covered almost nine kilometers of route.

In 1957, the intermediate end point Allee was given up, from then on all routes on line 22 ran to Gildenstraße while Sontheim was only served by line 20.

The tripartite operation of trams, buses and trolleybuses turned out to be costly. After the tram was discontinued, the trolleybus network began to be gradually converted to omnibus operation, initially the trolleybus operation was reduced to Monday through Friday. In December 1960, the Heilbronn municipal council finally decided to shut down operations, and the last trolleybuses in Heilbronn ran on the Böckingen route on December 30, 1960. The trolleybuses that were no longer needed and parts of the catenary infrastructure were then sold to the Landshut trolleybus and to Braga , Portugal .
