The newspaper was founded in 1981 by the publisher Bruno Hug. At the end of 1999 he sold it to Mediengruppe Südostschweiz AG , Chur, but remained publisher and editor-in-chief .

Hug was dismissed in December 2017 after the first instance conviction for a campaign violating personal rights against the KESB Linth ( child and adult protection authority ) and its head of Somedia, as was his deputy Mario Aldrovandi. The upper lake messages accepted the verdict, Hug, however, lay vocation and was acquitted on appeal from the District Court of St. Gallen.
