Oblimopa multistriata is a shell - type from the family of Limopsidae in the order of Arcida . The species, native to the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Red Sea, had already penetrated the Suez Canal in 1927 and was also detected on the coast of Israel in the 1970s. It does not seem to have established itself there because no new finds have been made since then.

features

The equally flattened, strongly flattened housing has a maximum length of 30 mm. It is about as high as it is long and roughly round in outline, only very slightly crooked. It is almost equilateral, with the vertebrae sitting in the center line of the case. The small, flat vortices are rolled up perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the housing. The case is only slightly trimmed at the rear edge, otherwise it hardly deviates from the round outline.

The small ligament sits externally in a triangular pit under the vertebrae but above the lock plate. The taxodontic lock plate is curved, adapted to the curve of the case. The teeth are arranged in two groups. The front area already has strong teeth in the middle that are slightly curved outwards. The back area has a few more teeth.

The whitish, aragonite shell is thick and hard-shelled. The ornamentation consists of fine ribs that cross with concentric lines. The concentric lines weaken with increasing age, so that in adult housings only the vertebral area has a reticulate pattern. The light brown to yellowish brown periostracum is drawn out to fine bristles at the edge of the case, otherwise it is thick and persistent. The inside of the shell is white, in the lower part of the case with an orange-colored arch following the edge of the case. The inner edge of the case is smooth.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The distribution area extends from the western Pacific Ocean over the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea . The species was detected in the Suez Canal as early as 1927. But it wasn't until 1965 that a specimen was found on the coast of Israel . Since no further specimens have been detected so far, it can be assumed that the species has not (yet?) Established itself in the Mediterranean.

The animals live on sand, fine gravel and gravel bottoms in shallow water. The specimen that was found in the Mediterranean Sea was dredged from a depth of 48 meters. They live on the sediment either attached with a few threads of byssus or actively moving. They are suspension filters.

Taxonomy

The description of the taxon by Peter Forsskål was published posthumously by Carsten Niebuhr in 1775 . The original combination was Arca multistriata . Peter Forsskål died of malaria in 1763 on a research trip to Yemen . Markus Huber chose the copy shown in Chemnitz (New Systematic Conchylia Cabinet, Volume 7) as the type copy.

The taxon is assigned to the genus Oblimopa Iredale, 1939 by MolluscaBase .
