Etymology and history of research
Walter Edmond Clyde Todd described the hummingbird under its current name Phaethornis subochraceus . The type specimen was collected on May 30, 1909 by José Steinmann (1856–1929) near Santa Cruz de la Sierra . The term "Phaethornis" is derived from the Greek words "phaethōn φαεθων " for "the shining, the shining one" and "ornis, ορνις " for "bird". The specific epithet »subochraceus« is a Latin structure from »sub« for »below, below« and »ochra« for » ocher «.
