The Octavians [ ˌokˈteɪvɪænz ] are a German a cappella ensemble from Jena .

history

The Octavians were founded in 2006 by eight former and active members of the boys' choir of the Jena Philharmonic . You are multiple awardees of various a cappella competitions. One of the special features of the ensemble is that it has 3 counter tenors, which enable the group to intone a spectrum from the highest soprano to the deep bass.

The ensemble performed nationwide on behalf of the Jena Philharmonic, the Thuringian Ministry of Culture and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . Internationally, the Octavians have already acted several times as "cultural ambassadors", for example in 2015 as part of a concert series organized by the Goethe-Institut in Tunisia or in 2017 in Guangzhou, China, as a delegate for the city of Jena. The 8 singers have already been toured across Europe on other tours. B. in Switzerland, England, Italy, Spain, Sweden and France.

The Octavians received their first national award in 2010 with the first prize at the national competition Jugend musiziert in the section "Vocal Ensemble: 3–6 voices, age group VII" with 25 points, followed shortly by the production of their first CD "Prelude" at the classic label Querstand . A year later they took second place at the a cappella festival “Vokal total” in Graz. In 2013 the club anthem of 1. FC Carl Zeiss Jena was produced in cooperation with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra and the CD Golden Twenties was released by Rondeau Production - a homage to the Comedian Harmonists. This album, produced by "Rondeau", also includes modern pieces of swing and jazz. In November 2015 her third sound carrier, again produced by Rondeau, was released - a Christmas CD with the title "Es nah ein Licht". In 2016, the Octavians toured all of Germany with an anniversary program on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.

At the International A cappella Competition in Leipzig 2017, the ensemble achieved second place, the best placement of the event and qualified for participation in the International Festival for Vocal Music 2018.

As part of a concert tour with the organist Matthias Eisenberg , the ensemble performed the series of stanzas Kreuzleich by the minstrel Heinrich von Meißen from the 13th century in a recomposition by Karsten Gundermann throughout Germany .
