Odd Squad - Young agents save the world (Original title: Odd Squad ) is a Canadian - American television series . It was first broadcast on November 26, 2014 on TVOKids in Canada and on PBS in the USA.

action

The series follows the exploits of Odd Squad, an organization run entirely by children that uses math skills to solve special problems. In particular, in the first season there are usually two employees of the organization's investigative department who work in the 13579 district of the organization: the agents Olive and Otto and Olympia and Otis in the second season. Selected episodes show other types of employees of the fictional organization, such as security officers, so-called "tube operators" and scientists. With one exception, the names of employees always begin with the letter O.

Agents are usually assigned cases by their boss, Ms. O., and travel through a system of interconnected pipes to get to their destinations. They derive the solution to the problem or the course of action to hold the offender back from basic mathematical principles that are usually the focus of the episode. Often they cannot solve the problem on the spot and have to return to the headquarters of their station or to the "Matheraum", a sentient room that communicates via large fortune tellers made of paper and which can be opened to display information that helps the agents identify and relate better to solve. In addition to mathematics, agents also use "gadgets" developed by scientists. In the first season, Agent Oscar heads the laboratory and in the second season wins an assistant, Agent Oona, who eventually takes over the laboratory after Oscar is promoted. The characters also have to deal with a variety of recurring villains who often mathematically mess up their actions.

The Odd Squad headquarters seal shows a jackalope with a sign in front of it (with a picture of the seal - an example of the Droste effect ) and bananas on each side.

The series is produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and The Fred Rogers Company . It is aimed at 5- to 8-year-olds and aims to promote their skills in mathematics and collaboration.

reception

Forbes employee Andy Robertson described the series as a “weird and wonderful combination of oddness, kids in charge, gadgets and math” (meaning “strange and wonderful combination of weirdness, kids who are in charge, gadgets and math”). His children would normally avoid educational programs, but in this case they would make an exception due to the strong characters, special effects and gadgets, and the random humor that would go down well with them and Robertson himself. The enthusiasm for the series is not limited to his family, they received a total of 70 million views in January 2015.

Patrick Kevin Day also noted in the Los Angeles Times that while the Odd Squad episodes had an educational component, the rudimentary math lessons didn't spoil the general impression of fun. The concept of organizations solving inexplicable cases is well known from programs like the X-Files and Men in Black , where replacing adults with children would make things more pleasant. He saw a potential problem in the fact that the actors could quickly get too old for the series.

Awards (selection)

The series was nominated several times for the Canadian Screen Award and won it in 2016 in the category "Best Pre-School Program or Series", 2017 in "Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or Series" and 2018 in "Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or Series ”,“ Best Writing in a Children's or Youth Program or Series ”(screenplay) and“ Best Cross-Platform Project - Children's and Youth ”.

The series was also nominated several times at the Daytime Emmy Awards and won in 2016 in the four categories “Outstanding Writing in a Children's or Pre-School Children's Series” (screenplay), “Outstanding Directing in a Children's or Pre-School Children's Series” (director ), “Outstanding Costume Design / Styling” and “Outstanding Hairstyling”. In 2017 she was awarded in five categories: “Outstanding Performer in a Children's, Pre-School Children's or Family Viewing Program” (for actor Isaac Kragten), “Outstanding Costume Design / Styling”, “Outstanding Hairstyling” and “Outstanding Makeup”.
