Odej Kao (born July 17, 1971 in Skopje , Macedonia ) is a German computer scientist and professor for complex and distributed systems at the Technical University of Berlin , as well as board spokesman for the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) in Berlin.

Career

After a six-month German course, Odej Kao studied computer science at the Clausthal University of Technology from October 1991 to September 1995 and won the DAAD award for outstanding academic achievement. In December 1997 he received his doctorate on the subject of New Approaches to Suppressing Impulse Noise in Gray-Scale and Color Images at the University's Institute of Computer Science.

Odej Kao then worked as a research assistant at the university from 1998 to 2002 and completed his habilitation in computer science before he was appointed head of the Operating Systems and Distributed Systems department at the University of Paderborn . A year later Odej Kao was appointed director of the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC2).

In August 2006 he moved to the Technical University of Berlin as head of the department for the operation of complex IT systems and was also appointed director of the IT service center tubIT. He was also (Pro) Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (2013 to 2017), Chief Information Officer of the Technical University of Berlin (since 2016) and Board Spokesman of the Einstein Center for Digital Future (since 2017). He did some research stays at the University of California at Irvine .

Odej Kao is one of the researchers at the Berlin Big Data Center (BBDC) and in the DFG research group Stratosphere. The Stratosphere project developed the basis for a big data platform, which was later included in the Apache collection under the name Apache Flink . In the SFB 1404 FONDA (Foundations of Workflows for Large-Scale Scientific Data Analysis) the fundamentals for the creation and execution of scientific workflows are examined.

Currently Odej Kao is the board spokesman of the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF) . This interdisciplinary center is an important component of the Berlin digital agenda and is based on a large private-public partnership model: Industry sponsors finance up to 50 new professorships in the field of digitization. The state of Berlin supports the center through co-financing. The sponsoring institution is the Einstein Foundation Berlin . The ECDF consortium includes the Technical University of Berlin ( host university ), the Free University of Berlin , the Humboldt University of Berlin , the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts . The Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin and the University of Technology and Economics Berlin are associated with the ECDF. In addition, eight non-university research institutions are involved in the ECDF. The ECDF is located in the Robert Koch Forum at Wilhelmsstrasse 67 in Berlin, the former location of the Robert Koch Museum . He is also one of the three heads of the HEIBRIDS graduate school (Helmholtz Einstein International Berlin Research School in Data Science).

Research and Teaching

The main research focus is on finding, integrating and managing resources in complex, heterogeneous and dynamic systems that can change their structure and configuration depending on the problem at hand. This includes cloud computing , resource management , big data , anomaly detection and the construction and operation of complex infrastructures.

More functions

Odej Kao has been a member of the IT Commission of the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2013 and a member of the administrative board of the Association for the Promotion of a German Research Network (DFN) since 2018 . Since 2016 he has also been Chief Information Officer of the Technical University of Berlin.

Literature review

From 1997 to 2017, more than 200 journal and conference articles, books and book chapters as well as reports were published that were written by Odej Kao as part of his scientific work or in which he was significantly involved.
