Odie Payne (born August 27, 1926 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 1, 1989 ibid) was an American drummer. His music was the Chicago blues . In the course of his career he has played with many well-known blues musicians, including Sonny Boy Williamson II , Muddy Waters , Jimmy Rogers , Eddie Taylor , Little Johnny Jones , Tampa Red , Elmore James , Otis Rush , Yank Rachell , Sleepy John Estes , Little Brother Montgomery , Memphis Minnie , Magic Sam , Chuck Berry , Buddy Guy and many more.

biography

Even as a child, Payne was enthusiastic about music without committing to a particular style of play. His music studies were interrupted by the war when he was called up for military service. After the war he finished his percussion studies with distinction.

In 1949 he was drumming for the pianist Johnny Jones when he met Tampa Red and switched to his band. In 1952, Payne and Jones joined Elmore James' band The Broomdusters. Payne stayed with James for three years, but accompanied him on recordings until 1959. He can be heard on 31 Elmore James singles.

In the second half of the 1950s, Payne became a sought-after session musician. His innovative style influenced numerous drummers.
