Odium is a Hessian power and thrash metal band from Frankfurt am Main , which was founded in 1993.

history

Shortly after Morgoth released the album Odium , the guitarist Rochus Pfaff decided to found a band under this name. The group initially worked as a cover band before adding their own songs. In 1996 the band, which by now consisted of guitarist David Hübsch, bassist Joachim Weingärtner, drummer Tobias Link and singer Dirk Berge, recorded their self-titled debut album. The same line-up followed two years later with the second album Into the Outfields . After that, Berge and Weingärtner left the band. A little later, the singer Reinhard Runkel and the bassist Christof Reiber joined as new members. The album A New Beginning , which was released in 2001, was first recorded in a professional studio. After that, the drummer Link left the line-up, making Pfaff the only remaining founding member from 2006. Martin Kunz came as a replacement. After that, however, the line-up changed again significantly, so that only Pfaff and Hübsch remained in the band. The line-up was then supplemented by bassist Belinda Ann Smaka, drummer Marcus Uchtmann and Ralf Runkel, who was not related to his predecessor. The next album then followed in 2010 with Stop My Anger . Thereafter, the line-up of the drums changed several times before the next album followed in 2012 via Noisehead Records under the name Beautiful Violence . Jan Heusel was now in the group as the drummer. In the meantime the band has also been able to perform live more often and played together with Paul Di'Anno , Obituary , Axxis and Rage . In addition, the band held gigs both inside and outside Germany . In August 2014, the album The Science of Dying followed. Paul Di'Anno can be heard as a guest musician in the song Die with Pride . In March 2015 the group went on tour through Europe . Marcel Müller can be heard as the new drummer on the 2017 album As the World Turns Black . In 2018, Odium celebrated its 25th anniversary and in November released the album The Early Years 1993-1998 , which only features newly recorded songs by Grim Reaper , Odium and Into the Outfields .

style

According to the band's biography on odium-metal.de , the group deals with topics such as death, love and hate in their lyrics. Matthias Mineur from Metal Hammer described the music on Written in Flesh as straightforward Metal , which you can hear clear Thrash Metal influences. In addition, "various concerts together with Testament , Tankard , Napalm Death and Clawfinger had a direct influence on the songwriting". Mineur found that the band plays melodic metal on A New Beginning , which has a high recognition value and was also "cleverly arranged and just as skilfully orchestrated". Michael Edele from laut.de stated in his review of The Science of Dying that, as already known from the past, a mixture of Thrash and Power Metal is played. In addition to hard Thrash Metal songs, there are also finer and more melodic songs on the album. The vocals sound pressed and are somewhat melodic. The rough vocals go more with the heavier than with the melodic songs. Towards the end of the album the band seemed to be getting more experimental, for example a children's choir could be heard in the chorus of the song War .
