Odon de Pins
Fra ' Odon de Pins , also Otto von Pins , Odo Pinaeus, Odo de Pinibus, Eudes de Pins , († March 24, 1296 in Cyprus ) was a nobleman from Provence and from 1294 until his death in 1296 the 23. Grand Master of the Order of St. John .
The order had lost all of its possessions on the Syrian and Palestinian mainland in 1291 and withdrew to Cyprus . Odon continued the fortification of the new Johanniter headquarters in Limassol , which his predecessor had begun . Odon, who was of advanced age when he took office, was particularly distinguished by his piety. During his tenure, the Order concentrated particularly on its hospital work and did not undertake any military offensives. However, he continued to expand his own fleet, which was initially used to transport pilgrims from Italy to the Holy Land , and later also to escort pilgrim ships . This marked the beginning of the order's change of military orientation from a land to a sea power. His military inactivity and neglect of military discipline earned him the resistance of some of his friars, who applied to Pope Boniface VIII to remove Odons. The Pope invited Odon to Rome for a hearing. While preparing for his departure for Rome, Odon fell seriously ill and died in the spring of 1296.
He was succeeded by Guillaume de Villaret , under whose leadership the order went back on the offensive.
