Odvar Nordli (born November 3, 1927 in Stange ; † January 9, 2018 ) was a Norwegian social democratic politician and Prime Minister of his country.

Life

Nordli, a trained auditor , was deputy mayor of his hometown from 1951 to 1963. From 1951 to 1961 he was chairman of the Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking (AUF) in the province of Hedmark . From 1961 Nordli belonged to the Norwegian parliament in Storting . There he was parliamentary group leader of the Arbeiderpartiet from 1973 to 1976 . From 1968 to 1971 he was chairman of the Arbeiderpartiet in Hedmark.

Between March 1971 and October 1972 he was Minister for Local Authorities and Labor. From 1976 to 1981 he was Prime Minister of Norway . After his resignation he served as Vice President of the Storting until 1985 and as Fylkesmann (governor) of the province of Hedmark until 1993 . From 1985 to 1993 he was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee .

Nordli was awarded the Order of St. Olav (Komtur) in 1994.
