Of Darkness was founded in 2004 in Barcelona by Fernando "Julkarn" and Javier "Bastard" Félez, who became famous with groups like Graveyard , The Bleeding Sun and Teitanblood . The band, treated as a side project, was conceptually oriented towards "exploring the darkest side of music from a metal perspective".

The project debuted in November 2004 with the self-released Demo Death . In a review written for the webzine Doom-Metal.com, Arnstein Petersen praised the demo and judged Of Darkness to be "one of the most promising funeral doom bands in a long time". A few months later a second demo appeared with The Empty Eye , which was praised by Cody Liebetrue as a “great” piece of “excruciatingly slow Funeral Dooms”. In the following years, both demos were re-released.

In addition, the project took part in the split album Scorpiace . That, along with Like Drone Razors Through Flesh Sphere , was released as a music cassette on Black Mass Records in 2012 . After this involvement, the band, which continued as a side project, remained inactive for a long time. It wasn't until 2015 that a regular studio album was released via Gradual Hate Records with Tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki - Passio et mors Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Lucam . The album, designed as an adaptation of Krzysztof Penderecki's St. Luke Passion , was praised as a successful “mixture of neoclassical and funeral doom”.

style

The music played by Of Darkness is attributed to Funeral Doom . For a classifying comparison, reviewers refer to genre representatives such as Winter , Stabat Mater , Wormphlegm , Skepticism , Thergothon and Nortt . According to the webzine Doom-Metal.com , the music “Concentrated on the grim and suicidal” is in the genre. The atmospheric effect is summarized in the same place as “raw and destroying all hope”. The band's slogan is referred to as an atmospheric and programmatic reference:

"What can be dead, should be dead."

"What can be dead should be dead."

- Of Darkness quoted from Doom-Metal.com

In reference to comparative figures like Thergothon, Arnstein Petersen emphasizes the "slowness and heaviness" of Of Darkness. These had "only achieved a few before". The rhythm follows a philosophy of explicit slowness. Meanwhile, the particularly loud guitar playing and the ethereally gruesome use of the synthesizers are more important for the music than the tempo. The music combines elements of “ dark ambient ” or “ neoclassical ” with elements of industrial and black metal within the framework of Funeral Doom . This manifests itself in clear and guttural singing , which is presented as growling, screaming and screeching as well as in feedback and the harsh guitar playing overall.
