West side of the Pestmarter

The so-called Pestmarter is under monument protection standing shrine in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach .

The small monument stands on the east side of the confluence of Kreuzbergstrasse and Kaulangerstrasse, around 70 m east of the Kaulanger Bridge over the Kronach River . It was only subsequently moved to its current location on the north side of Kaulangerstraße and was originally located on the left bank of the river on the south side of the street.

The wayside shrine made of sandstone was probably created in the early 15th century in the Gothic era and is one of the oldest tortures in the Kronach district . On the west side of the octagonal shaft there is a heavily weathered coat of arms , the origin of which can no longer be determined. The shaft carries a laterally projecting, four-sided attachment with reliefs on all sides. On the two main sides, under pressed keel arches adorned with crabs , the crucifixion group can be seen to the west and the Christ carrying the cross to the east . The two narrow sides show Saint Barbara with a tower to the north and Saint Catherine with a wheel to the south . The top is crowned by a finial , half of which has already come off.
