Of Men and Demons is an American animated short film directed by John Hubley in 1969.

action

A farmer lives alone on an island. Every day he sows grain, waters it, mows it and forms hay bales, fishes for a fish that he eats in the evening and falls asleep after a little flute music. The three demons rain, fire and storm, who live in a mountain not far from the island, are bored, and so they lay the island in ruins, destroy the man's straw house, his fishing nets and his grain. The farmer who tried in vain to make a sacrifice to the demons is devastated.

A woman appears on the island, brings a boat full of fish and sets everything back up with the man: the straw house is turned into a brick building, the hay bales are now mechanically bundled and other things are regulated by complex machines. The demons want to disturb the peace on the island again. The rainwater is now caught in a reservoir and the overflow is used to irrigate plants. The fire is caught in a melting pot and the thunderstorm is used to generate electricity for lighting.

Once again the demons sit down and decide to throw the modern into chaos. They develop cars and disrupt the mechanics of the machines. Soon mankind will sink into smog and garbage, divers will find garbage in the sea, anglers will fish car tires, things will build up and the machines will no longer work. Man and woman are at a loss until they can convert a disk with a 1 into one with a 0 in a machine. The man has an idea and invents a machine to produce these symbols in large numbers. With the help of the binary code created in this way, both get humanity going again, everything gets its order and life becomes colorful again. The demons make a few more attempts to swallow or destroy the code, but in the end surrender to it with a laugh.
