In 1988, the Worms Open Canal went on air for the first time as one of the first open canals in Rhineland-Palatinate . Every citizen can send self-produced films free of charge, according to the motto "Citizens make television".
The Worms Open Canal is distributed to around 25,000 households via the cable network in Worms and Osthofen (Canal S 20). In 2003, 497 contributions were broadcast in 1164 hours. In the building of the Karmeliter primary school there are analog and digital editing suites as well as a studio for live broadcasts.
Some of the regular programs and interest groups from the "first hour" are still on the air today to inform the people of Worms about what is happening in their city. These include the “ Freitagspalette ”, “Jugendforum” (today “ Wormser TV-Illustrierte ”) and the “Wormser Monday Magazine”. At first, the local press saw unwanted competition arising from the current sports coverage of the magazine “Lokalsport”, but it did not last to this day.
At the beginning of the 1990s , the independent "Förderverein Wormser Montags-Magazin" caused a sensation in the press: It is unique among Germany's open channels that there is another independent organization in addition to the official sponsoring association of the state headquarters for media and communication . The differences were settled, but tasks are still divided up to this day - if the official sponsoring association provides premises and ensures broadcasting, the sponsoring association has great weight on the content.
