Sheringham Shoal is an offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom in the North Sea . It is located 17 kilometers off the Norfolk coast on an area of 35 km². The construction work lasted from 2009 to 2011; The park started operating in 2012. The forecast annual standard energy capacity is 1.1 TWh, which can supply around 220,000 households. When it was built, the wind farm was one of the largest offshore wind farms in the country.
History and construction
In 2004 the UK government identified the area as a potential area for offshore wind energy use, as it has some advantages due to wind speeds, water depth, low fishing activities and accessibility. In 2008 the operating company received the license to operate.
Offshore installation work began in autumn 2009. The first turbine was installed in August 2011; shortly afterwards the first electricity was fed into the grid. The work lasted until July 2012. The park was officially opened in September 2012. A dud was discovered during construction on April 30, 2010 .
The wind farm was built by Scira Offshore , which leased the area from the Crown Estate for 40 years. In total, Norwegian investors spent NOK 10 billion or £ 1.8 billion.
A repowering is to take place 20 to 25 years after commissioning.
technology
The wind farm consists of 88 wind turbines of the type Siemens SWT-3.6 to 107 and has an installed total capacity of 316.8 MW . Each wind turbine has a hub height of 80 meters and is anchored in the sea floor with monopile foundations. These have a length of 50 to 55 m, a weight of 400 to 600 tons and a diameter of about 5 m.
business
The wind farm was initially part of the Scira Offshore joint venture , which is owned by Statkraft and Statoil . Statkraft is responsible for the management. In December 2017 Statkraft sold its stake in UK fund manager Equitix for £ 558 million. The wind farm is owned by Equitix (40%), Statoil (40%) and an offshore wind fund managed by the Green Investment Group .
60 people are employed to operate the wind farm. A maintenance contract was concluded with Siemens for the first five years of operation.
The export cables , which feed the electricity from the two transformer platforms to the grid connection point on land, are around 22 kilometers long and operate at a voltage of 145 kV. The inner park cabling is carried out at medium voltage level.
