Often it happens unexpectedly - Ideas and Failures is a 37 minute long sketch show by Otto Schenk from 1986. It is the Austrian counterpart to the sketch series by the German humorist Loriot . Otto Schenk in the leading roles depicts unexpected events and mishaps in a humorous way. Schenk also appears as an announcer between the sketches in front of the backdrop of a café.

The skits

1. A concertmaster initially plays the overture to Tristan with his orchestra , a little later the orchestra unexpectedly plays the overture to Carmen .

2. An unemployed actor who is employed as a babysitter in a French family has insufficient knowledge of the French language. Because of this, he can only speak half-understandable French to the girl in the kitchen at table. The babysitter declaims a role from Shakespeare's Faust, then a role from Valentin Cerhof. Every now and then the girl says "Papa" in amazement. While eating, he learns the girl table manners, but due to a mishap the dumpling bowl breaks, so that both are involved in a dumpling battle. The girl then asks for the ketchup bottle, with the babysitter having additional difficulty opening the bottle. The girl can open it, first splashing the picture of the grandmother with it and immediately afterwards the babysitter. The parents then arrive. The babysitter tells them that the girl is very good and that her French is poor.

3. The TV cook hesitantly explains how to prepare a meat dish, but he doesn't want to get the meat to sizzle. But he says that it will be done.

4. A married couple is staying in an Italian restaurant. The wife advises her husband against eating spaghetti, as it is also available in Austria and should try other dishes. The Italian head waiter then serves the couple and explains the correct pronunciation of the dishes, but has language problems with German. However, the couple can decide on a dish and the head waiter explains the dishes with the same language problems to the German cook, whereupon the cook only says: "Kriegst'e."

5. The TV chef explains how to prepare a quail breast from nouvelle cuisine. But the ingredients are very small and few. As soon as the dish is ready, he announces that this amount is calculated for 4 people.

6 a. A man orders a humorous book in the library reading room. He is so amused by it that he falls into loud laughter and thus disturbs the rest of the people sitting next to him. The rebukes of the other readers, however, are in vain.

6 b. The same man is on a rock face with a comrade. While climbing he sees the same funny book in his comrade's pocket, laughs loudly here too and then falls off.

6 c. After the crash, the man lies in a cast in the hospital. His comrade visits him there and brings him the funny book again. Here, however, he lets out laughter in intense pain

7. The hospital round with the chief physician comes to a patient bound in a cast. The chief physician sharply criticizes the inadequate plaster of paris ties and treats the patient roughly. The head physician then asks the patient about his well-being, which the patient confirms with "good".

8. A sleepy doctor sees a patient in severe pain. The patient describes his pain, but the doctor reacts with a sleepy expression. However, he asks the patient to break free. The doctor also does an oral check and gives the patient a free choice of medication. While eavesdropping, he tells the patient to breathe gently so that he can sleep. The sleepy doctor also urges the patient off the bed, but the patient can straighten up and lie down on the bed again. The patient announces that he is fine when lying down, but the doctor lies down on the patient's stomach and sleeps.

9 a. A man with a cold goes to the ladies at a festive reception, kisses them on the hand and has fits of sneezing.

9 b. In the ring, the tightrope walker, who works with an armchair and pole, suddenly has a sneeze fit. What happens after that remains in the dark.

9 c. During a duel, a man mistakenly shoots a second after sneezing.

10. A tired castle guide leads a group of visitors through a historic castle. The guide explains all the objects incorrectly, swaps the floor with the ceiling fresco, later also the ancestral gallery and the hunting room, and only when he confuses a killed bear with the princess "Fifi" does the guide recognize his mistakes.

11. In the ballet "Swan Lake" the dancer disrupts the solo performance of a ballerina.

12. In the ballet "The Nutcracker", the trio has a fourth and clumsy dancer.

13 a. The tired conductor initially conducts the orchestra correctly, but is later startled by the orchestra with short violin tones.

13 b. The conductor is absorbed in a lively piece of music that he continues to move even though the orchestra has stopped playing.

14. Mr. Möller has the Japanese company Nakashiva deliver a stereo system to his house. When the experts enter the house, the boss (Mr. Shushi) tests the room acoustics of Möller's living room, whereby the employees remove all the furniture, which astonishes Mr. Möller. Mr. Shushi then conducts sound samples with a CD. The frequency test has the consequence that the glass showcase breaks and then the glass of the apartment door too. The sound of Götterdämmerung at full volume leads to a crack in the wall and the ceiling of the living room collapses in the case of Tonbrobe with Pearl Harbor .

15. In the final ice skating scene, a man acts clumsily and has to be led by a talented lady.
