Without the sun

Without sun ( Russian Без солнца / Bes solnza , scientific transliteration Bez solnca ) is a cycle of songs by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839–1881).

The six songs for a voice and piano were published in 1874. The songs were written on verses of the romantic poet Arseni Golenishchev-Kutuzov (1848–1913), with whom Musorgsky was friends at the time. The poet also wrote the verses for the better-known songs and dances of the death of Mussorgsky.

In the mid-1870s, the gradual disintegration of the so-called Mighty Heap (a group of five Russian composers), along with a number of personal circumstances, was a time of very painful experience for Mussorgsky. At the same time he came close to the young poet Golenishchev-Kutuzov, whose romantic ambitions were expressed in melancholy texts. Mussorgsky and Golenishchev-Kutuzov began renting an apartment together and then worked together as co-authors. According to the Musorgsky biography by Tatiana Wassiljewna Popowa, the music of the cycle is characterized by "profound psychologism, disturbing melodic representation, variable fluctuations in vague, unclear accompanying images".

The individual titles of the songs are as follows:

  1. "В четырех стенах" ("You tight room") - D major *
  2. "Меня в толпе ты не узнала" ("You didn't recognize me in the crowd") - D major
  3. "Окончен праздный шумный день" ("The feast day is over") - C major
  4. "Скучай" ("Longing") - B minor
  5. "Элегия" ("Elegy") - B minor, ending in F sharp minor
  6. "Над рекой" ("Over the river") - C sharp major *
