Oi! The Album is a music compilation put together by Garry Bushell in 1980 and published by EMI . The compilation shaped the style of the Oi! .

History of origin

After the original punk movement in Britain slowly subsided, a more raw style of music developed, more appealing to the working class. One of the first bands was Sham 69 . The British music press slowly lost interest in the once hyped punk scene, which was mainly shaped by bands such as the Sex Pistols , The Clash and The Damned . With the exception of the music magazine Sounds , which regularly reported on the new releases from the harder bands like Angelic Upstarts , Cockney Rejects and The Last Resort .

The music scene didn't have a name of its own until then. The music journalist Garry Bushell called the music Oi !, based on the stage announcements of the Cockney Rejects and their song Oi Oi Oi . Bushell negotiated with EMI about a compilation with the support of Sounds magazine, which was supposed to present the young scene. At that time he received numerous demos of similar bands. In addition to befriended bands like Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, he also took two older bands, Slaughter and the Dogs and Cock Sparrer, on the sampler, which were already active as pub rock bands long before the punk wave . Another band, which can be assigned to the punk camp, The Exploited , are also represented on the sampler.

Despite the Oi! Scene's claim to be apolitical, the Upstart songs feature two highly political songs on the album. The Cockney Rejects can be found four times on the sampler, but once under the pseudonym Postmen . The fourth contribution of Rejects is a project by Mick Geggus with Grant Fleming from The Kidz Next Door under the name Terrible Twins . This pseudonymization should be continued on the sampler series that resulted from this compilation.

Record cover

The yellow cover shows Micky Geggus from the Cockney Rejects making the upside-down Victory sign , which is as bad as the finger in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa . The liner notes were written by Garry Bushell and are written in Cockney slang .

reception

Although it was the first Oi! Sampler, later samplers like Strength Thru Oi! more attention and are described by the press as being more stylistic. The series includes a large number of compilations, but only the first four are from Bushell. It was then continued by Link Records and then called a number of similar-looking imitators on the scene.

Song / artist information

The two Angelic Upstarts songs deal with the content of the war. The song Guns for the Afghan Rebels calls for solidarity with the Afghan rebels. The lyrics of Last Night Another Soldier attacks the British Army as such, the song was written as a reaction to the Northern Ireland conflict .

Max Splodge and Desert Island Joe are founding members of the 1977 band Splodgenessabounds . On the album they are responsible for the humorous part.

Peter & The Test Tube Babies first appeared on the album with the term Oi! in touch and then adopted the name as a band description. In the liner notes they get the nickname "bleedin 'idiots from Brighton " from Bushell .

The Exploited, a Scottish punk band, have been associated with the Oi! Scene since the compilation, but are actually not part of it.
