Okada Saburōsuke ( Japanese 岡田 三郎 助 ; born January 12, 1869 in Saga ; † September 23, 1939 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga style and professor at the Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō , forerunner institution of the Tokyo University of the Arts .

Life

Okada Saburōsuke was the third son of the vassal of the Nabeshima clan Ishio Takaki. At the age of 18 he was adopted by Okada Masazō as heir. He attended the school for western painting of Soyama Kihiko ( 曽 山 幸 彦 , 1860-1892), became a member of the artists' association Meiji Bijutsu-kai in 1891 and continued his studies with Horie Masaaki ( 堀 江 正 章 , 1852-1932) at his school after his early death Daikikan ( 大 幸 館 ), which he graduated in 1893. In the same year he changed under the influence of Kuroda Seiki and Kume Keiichirō ( 久 米 敬 一郎 , 1866-1934) a. a. painters returned from France to open-air painting. In 1896, at the age of 27, he became assistant professor at the Department of Western Painting ( Yōga ) of the Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō. In the same year he also became a founding member of the Hakuba-kai . In 1897 he went to France with a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and continued his education under Raphaël Collin .

In 1902 Okada returned from France and was appointed professor. At 37, he married the playwright Osanai Kaoru's daughter Yachiyo . In 1907 he became a member of the jury for the art exhibition of the Ministry of Culture, the Mombushō Tenrankai , which took place annually from that year onwards (abbreviated colorful ). In 1912 he founded the "Hongo Institute for Western Painting" together with Fujishima Takeji . In 1920 he became a member of the "Imperial Academy of Fine Arts" ( 帝国 美術 院 , Teikoku Bijutsu-in ).

In 1930 he was sent to Europe by the Ministry of Culture . In 1934 he became an advisor to the Imperial Court in matters of art ( 帝室 技 芸 員 ). In 1937 he was one of the first winners of the newly created cultural order .
