Okaukuejo, aerial view

Okaukuejo is the name of a former German police and military station in Namibia , located in the south of today's Etosha National Park . The place was originally called Okakwiya, "the woman who gives birth to a child every year". Today it is a hotel of Namibia Wildlife Resorts . The park administration and the ecological institute (Etosha Ecological Institute) are also located there.

After the outbreak of the rinderpest epidemic in 1897, a control post was set up here to demarcate the entire northern country in order to prevent the further spread of the disease from the northern Ovambo areas. In 1901 it became a fortified military post and was the middle link in the chain from Sesfontein to Namutoni . Its military importance, however, always remained minor, a few years later Okaukuejo was destroyed and the German colonial administration built a police station with a round limestone tower. The current tower, on the other hand, dates from 1963.

Okaukuejo had all the more practical importance in connection with the establishment and administration of the Etosha nature reserve , the later Etosha National Park, because the park administration had its seat here - and together with the ecological institute it still has today. After the Etosha nature reserve became more and more of a tourist attraction after the Second World War, there was an increasing need for accommodation. In 1950, Okaukuejo became the first rest camp in Etosha National Park that was open to the general public and open all year round.

In 1953 the first ranger in the Etosha area was stationed here. At that time the Haiǁkom were the only people living within the park area.

At the Okaukuejo waterhole, which is illuminated in the evening, you can see huge herds of zebra and wildebeest , often an elephant family , giraffes and occasionally rhinos .
