Olav Leonard Harry Hodne (born June 16, 1921 in Lindås , † October 29, 2009 ) was a Norwegian missionary and author.

Life

Olav Hodne, the son of a district secretary, grew up in Bergen and attended the mission school in Stavanger from 1941 to 1946 after graduating . After theological studies he worked for the Norwegian Santalmisjon and was sent to India in 1948 . There Hodne headed the first Norwegian school in Assam . From 1955 the Norwegian was responsible for building schools and church work in the former Bengali princely state of Cooch Behar . In 1967 he received his doctorate in Oslo with a thesis on the Norwegian missionary Lars Olsen Skrefsrud (1840-1910) who had been active in India as a doctor of theology.

During the Bengali freedom struggle, Hodne started his own refugee programs and was later supported in his work by numerous organizations, including the Lutheran World Service , for which he organized work in Bangladesh from 1972 . He served as a missionary for the organization in India until the early 1980s. In his retirement he still supported the work of aid organizations in Asia.

Olav Hodne had been married to Brit Waagbø since 1947, who supported him in his work. The daughter Kari Hilde Hodne French (* 1949) emerged from the marriage and was also involved in refugee work in India and human rights work in Afghanistan . His grandson Joshua French (* 1982), a Norwegian soldier, was charged with murder and espionage for Norway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in early May 2009 and sentenced to death.

Hodne has received numerous awards for his missionary work. In 1976 he was awarded the Nansen Refugee Prize . In 1983 Hodne received the Order of Saint Olav and was raised to the rank of commander. The Norwegian has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times .

As an author, Hodne published several books on missionary work in India, most recently Oppreisning (2006) about the missionary Paul Olaf Bodding (1865–1938) who was active in India . He died in 2009 at the age of 88.
