Olaus Magni
Olaus Magni ( Finnish : Olavi Maununpoika ) (* around 1405 in Piikkiö ; † February 24, 1460 in Turku ) was a scholar and bishop of Turku in Finland .
Life
Magni lived in Paris from around the middle of the 1420s and passed his master's degree there in 1428. He then taught Aristotelian ethics at the Sorbonne . He became procurator and receptor of the Anglo-German nation at the university. From 1435 to 1436 he was finally its rector . As a Socius he belonged to the college of theology, was a baccalaureate in theology and was a theology teacher.
In 1436 the Sorbonne sent him to King Charles VII in Bourges . There he was supposed to assure the king of the repentance and subservience of the university. The university had previously spoken out in favor of condemning Joan of Arc , a supporter of Charles. After Karl emerged victorious from the Hundred Years' War , people felt compelled to show such repentance.
In 1437 Olaus Magni took part in the Council of Basel as a representative of his nation.
Magni was elected Archdeacon and Provost of the Diocese of Turku while he was still in Paris . Then in 1450 he became Bishop of Turku. He succeeded his relative Magnus Tavast . He held the office until his death in 1460.
His tomb is in Turku Cathedral .
