Oldřich Kulhánek (born February 26, 1940 in Prague ; † January 28, 2013 there ) was a Czech painter, graphic artist , illustrator , set designer and educator .

Life

Kulhánek studied from 1953 to the University of Applied Arts in Prague with Karel Svolinský . He had his first exhibition in 1968.

Some of his graphics from the years 1968–1971, which were supposed to defame representatives of socialist countries, including Josef Stalin , were persecuted in communist Czechoslovakia before 1989 . Kulhánek spent a month in prison, after which the StB regularly interrogated him . The graphics in question could be hidden and published in the 1990s under the title Prohibita .

Kulhánek designed the graphics for the contemporary Czech crown banknotes . He followed up on this two-year work with the Funny Money cycle . Kulhánek also created many Czech postage stamps.
