Old Fashioned Love is a song written by lyricist Cecil Mack (1873-1944) and James P. Johnson (music) and published in 1923.

Creation and first recordings

Mack and Johnson wrote the songs for the Broadway show Runnin 'Wild . In addition to the dance number The Charleston , which was to become one of the greatest hits of the 1920s , the anthem-like ballad Old Fashioned Love also became a standard. In the show, the ballad was interpreted by Adelaide Hall .

Already in November of the same year, the song was recorded as a duet by Eva Taylor with tenor Lawrence Lomax with the Blue Five by Clarence Williams (Okeh 8114), which turned out to be "a little cheesy"; Williams also recorded an instrumental version of the song with his Blue Five (Okeh 4993).

Cover versions

Further recordings in 1923 were made by The Georgians and Cliff Edwards . A version recorded in early 1924 by Noble Sissle with Eubie Blake became a hit. One of the best versions is that of Alberta Hunter , also from 1924.

In the 20s and 30s in North America a. a. also Mezz Mezzrow , Red Norvo , Adrian Rollini and the Count Basie Orchestra a song. The Mills Brothers (with Louis Armstrong ) and Lena Horne (1940) recorded other vocal versions . James P. Johnson also recorded the number several times, as a soloist and in 1939 with his orchestra.

In Germany, the violinist Paul Godwin and his ensemble of artists recorded the piece under the title “The old cozy time” with “Grammophon”.
