Old Harbor Bay is a small town in the south of Jamaica . The city is located in County Middlesex in the Parish Saint Catherine . In 2010, Old Harbor Bay had a population of 8,715 people.

geography

Old Harbor Bay is located on the south coast of Jamaica in the bay of the same name . The place rises to 5 meters above sea level. On the eastern edge of the city, the bay flows into Galleon Harbor . Also to the east is a large mangrove forest reserve , which also includes the uninhabited Little Goat Island in the bay to the south-east .

To the north is the settlement of Moores Pen , whose borders merge with those of Old Harbor Bay. About 6 kilometers west of the town is the seaport of Port Esquivel, which, together with the city and Old Harbor, which is also 6 kilometers away but to the north, forms a trading center on the island. The city is located approximately eight miles northwest of Spanish Town, the capital of the Parish Saint Catherine.

history

Old Harbor Bay was founded between 1510 and 1513 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Esquivel as a fortified port under the name of Puerto de Esquivella Caballo Bayo . Later the fortification developed into a fishing village. When the island was conquered by English colonialists in the 16th century , Old Harbor Bay was given its current name.

Between the years 1845 and 1859, large numbers of people from India emigrated to Jamaica. The ships all docked in Old Harbor Bay. Today, Old Harbor Bay is home to a large community of Indian-born Jamaicans, most of whom are Hindu.

Industry and economy

Old Harbor Bay has a large international seaport and several shipyards. The city also has an international airport, Port Esquivel Airfield .

Together with the seaport of Port Esquivel and the trading center of Old Harbor, the place forms one of the most important trading centers for sugar and bauxite on the island. There is an important freight yard in Old Harbor, which is coupled with the harbors in Old Harbor Bay and Port Esquivel.

Most of the population of Old Harbor Bay is in the fishing industry.
