Old Tucson Studios is a 1.3  km² large film studio for Western in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona , 19 km west of Tucson . The studio is also an amusement park and is located within the mountainous Tucson Mountain Park .

The studio has its origins in 1939. Tucson was recreated for the film Arizona from the 1860s. Around 50 buildings were erected, including buildings made of adobe bricks , some of which have been preserved to this day. The film studio established itself in the 1950s and was regularly used as a location for filming. More and more buildings were erected. In 1959, for example, Rio Bravo was created with John Wayne in the Old Tucson Studios, other well-known westerns with scenes filmed in the Old Tucson Studios are Winchester '73 , Zwei reckoning and El Dorado .

Robert Shelton expanded the studio into an amusement park in 1960. In 1968 a production hall for interior shots was built and, with Mescal, a second film site 64 km southeast of Tucson was acquired, which offers a film location on one level. In 1970, the studio acquired the 1872 steam locomotive, The Reno , which has since featured in hundreds of films and television productions.

Television productions became another mainstay of Old Tucson Studios. Some episodes of High Chaparral were filmed here around 1970 . Old Tucson was used as a filming location for the series Our Little Farm between 1977 and 1983 .

One of the last blockbuster films to be produced at Old Tucson Studios was Faster than Death in 1995 . The film Tombstone with Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday was also shot here.

On April 25, 1995, a fire destroyed most of the buildings. After two years, the amusement park was reopened and offers visitors, among other things, visits to rebuilt filming locations.
