Olds [ əʊlds ] is a small town in Alberta , Canada . It is located about 90 kilometers north of Calgary in a prairie area within sight of the Rocky Mountains .
Olds is of regional importance as it is the second largest city after Airdrie between Calgary and the Red Deer , 150 km away . The local economy, as in much of Alberta, consists mainly of the oil industry, grain growing and cattle breeding for export to the USA . Olds College is located in Olds , which trains specifically for the agricultural sector. There is a large number of Christian churches with active parishes in relation to the population, which is not unusual for the region.
Olds has existed as a settlement since 1890 and as an independent town since 1905 . The name comes from George Olds , an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway who lived in the village for some time.
