Oleksa Charlampijowytsch Nowakiwskyj ( Ukrainian Олекса Харлампійович Новаківський * 14. March 1872 in Obodowka , Podolia Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 29. August 1935 in Lvov , Poland ) was a Ukrainian painter and educator, representative of the grouping Krakow Post-Impressionists .

Life

He studied from 1888 to 1892 in Odessa with F. Klimenko, then from 1892 to 1900 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow with Jan Matejko , Leon Wyczółkowski and Józef Unierzyski.

His works, which were also influenced by the works of his contemporaries Jacek Malczewski and Stanisław Wyspiański , were shown at an exhibition in Kraków in 1911. Thanks to the support of the Ukrainian-Greek-Catholic metropolitan Andrej Scheptyzkyj , he settled in Lemberg in 1913 and founded a painting school there in 1923. From 1924 to 1925 he headed the art faculty at the secret Ukrainian university.

He died in Lviv at the age of 63 and was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery .

In 1972 the Oleksa Novakivskyi Museum was built in Lviv.

Works

Nowakiwskyj showed his works in Lemberg in 1921 at an individual exhibition. His works in post-impressionist colors were highly valued by the Lviv critics. The range of topics is shaped by western Ukrainian folklore.
