Oleksiy Hryhorowytsch Iwachnenko ( Ukrainian Олексій Григорович Івахненко ; Russian Алексей Григорьевич Ивахненко Alexei Grigorjewitsch Iwachnenko ; born March 17, jul. / Thirtieth March  1913 greg. In Kobeliaky , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 16th October 2007 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Soviet and Ukrainian mathematician . He is known for developing the Group method of data handling (GMHD), a method of inductive statistical learning, due to which he is often referred to as the "father of deep learning ".

Iwachnenko graduated from the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute in 1938 and was a lecturer at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute from 1945 . In 1961 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and from 1964 he worked at the Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1991 he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR and in 1997 the State Prize of Ukraine.
