Sir John Oliver Wright , GCMG , GCVO , DSC (born March 6, 1921 in Hammersmith , London ; † September 1, 2009 ) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany between 1975 and 1981 .

Life

After attending the Solihull School, which was founded in 1560, John Oliver Wright, son of a hotelier, began studying Modern Languages at Christ's College at the University of Cambridge with financial support from a scholarship, specializing in German and French . He had to interrupt his studies between 1941 and 1945 because of the Second World War , in which he participated as a member of the Royal Naval Reserve . He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for his military service . After completing his studies, he entered the diplomatic service and, after various assignments, was for a short time Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Foreign Minister Alec Douglas-Home and then between 1963 and 1966 Private Secretary for Foreign Affairs Affairs of the now Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home of the Conservative Party and from October 1964 his successor Harold Wilson of the Labor Party .

He then replaced John Patrick Edward Chandos Henniker Major as ambassador to Denmark in 1966 and stayed there until 1969, whereupon Crawford Murray MacLehose was his successor there. Wright then moved to the Ministry of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) in 1969 , where he was Deputy Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Chief Clerk from 1970 to 1972 and then between 1972 and 1974 Deputy Under-Secretary of State and from 1973 First Deputy Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Economic) . On June 15, 1974 he was beaten Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) and has since had the suffix "Sir". Following acted 1974-1975 Deputy as a senior undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for the European Community (Deputy Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (European Community)) .

In 1975 he replaced Nicholas Henderson as ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany and held this post until he was replaced by John Lang "Jock" Taylor in 1981. During this time he was raised on June 13, 1978 to the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order and on December 31, 1980 to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG). Most recently, Sir John Oliver Wright succeeded Nicholas Henderson again in 1981, this time as Ambassador to the United States . He stayed in this position until he retired in 1986, after which Antony Acland took over as his successor there.
