Pekkala made his international debut in junior competitions in 2003. At the 2003 Junior World Championships in Sollefteå , he won bronze with the team. A year later he was able to win bronze in the individual competition. After good results in the Continental Cup , for example a second place in jumping in Kuopio on February 29, 2004, Pekkala made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup on March 10, 2004 . In Kuopio he reached the 47th place from the large hill. A year later he won with the team again bronze at the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi . He finished the 2006 Summer Grand Prix in 57th place overall. At the Finnish Championships in Lahti in 2007 he reached 6th place in the individual. From 2008, his performance decreased significantly, so that he was eliminated from the national team in mid-2009.
