history

Olsborg was first settled by wagriors around the middle of the 10th century based on dendrological studies based on current knowledge . It is located east of the Limes Saxoniae . On the island there was probably the Slavic settlement Plune (the nucleus of today's Plön), which Adam von Bremen describes in his Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum and also the chronicler Helmold von Bosau in the Chronica Slavorum . At that time a bridge led to the island. The castle was abandoned in the second half of the 12th century . According to a document from Albert von Stade , the castle was moved to today's Schlossberg von Plön in 1173. During excavations and underwater archaeological investigations in 1949/50 and 2004–2007, numerous remains of settlements and finds (including animal bones, ceramic parts and remains of the bridge) were uncovered or recovered.

From the year 1222 the water of the Plöner See was dammed to operate water mills. The island was flooded and only reappeared in 1882 after the water was lowered again.
