The two-armed weightlifting at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 took place on April 7th in the Panathinaiko Stadium .

There was no weight limit in this competition. Each athlete had three attempts, after everyone had completed these, the three athletes with the best results received three more attempts.

Both arms could be used to lift the weights, the competition is comparable to today's pushing .

The Dane Viggo Jensen and the Briton Launceston Elliot both lifted 111.5 kg. Jensen was declared the winner by Prince Georg , however , because he had a "better" style with the same performance as Elliot and Elliot made a lunge forward. Because of this there was a protest by the British delegation , which gave each of the two athletes further attempts. Jensen injured himself slightly in one of these attempts, but none could achieve a better result. So it stayed with the previous decision and Jensen was named the first Olympic champion in weightlifting.
