In the 1956 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Melbourne was on 23 November at the Royal Exhibition Building , the weightlifting featherweight held for men.

It was won by the American Isaac Berger ahead of the Soviet Russian Evgeni Minajew and the Polish Marian Zieliński .

The athletes competed against each other in the so-called three-way battle. In addition to the usual disciplines of tearing and pushing, this also included pushing. The lifter had to transfer the weight first and then bring it to the high stretch without using the legs.
According to the competition regulations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the body weight of every featherweight boxer had to be over 56 kg and not more than 60 kg.

Participating Nations

A total of 21 athletes from the following 19 nations took part.

Result

Four records were set during the competition: The winner Isaac Berger set a new world record with 352.5 kg (total) and two Olympic records with 107.5 kg in snatch and 137.5 kg in jerk. The runner-up Jewgeni Minajew also set a new world record in pushing with 115.0 kg.
