In the 1956 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Melbourne was on 24 November at the Royal Exhibition Building , the weightlifting middleweight held for men.

It was won by the Soviet Russian Fyodor Bogdanowski ahead of the British Peter George and the Italian Ermanno Pignatti .

The athletes competed against each other in the so-called three-way battle. In addition to the usual disciplines of tearing and pushing, this also included pushing.
According to the competition regulations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the body weight of every middleweight boxer had to be over 67.5 kg and not more than 75.0 kg.

A total of 16 athletes from the following 15 nations took part.

Result

Four records were set during the competition: The winner Fjodor Bogdanowski set a world record with 420.0 kg (total) and two Olympic records with 132.5 kg in pushing and 165.0 kg in pushing. The runner-up, Peter George from Great Britain , set an Olympic record in snatching at 127.5 kg.
