Omar Shapli

Omar Shapli (born August 2, 1930 in Cairo , † December 29, 2010 in Pittsfield / Massachusetts ) was an American actor, drama teacher and author of Egyptian origin.

The son of the Egyptian officer Aziz Ali al-Misri came to the United States as a child with his mother and attended Scarsdale High School there . In 1948 he began studying at the University of Chicago . In 1951 he was drafted into the military and took part in the Korean War.

He then returned to Chicago and performed at the Second City comedy club in the 1960s . As a writer, director and actor, he has participated in numerous performances in Chicago and New York. In addition, he moderated music programs on the radio stations WFMT , WNYC and WRVR , where he also produced a series of radio plays. From 1966 to 1983 he taught at the School of Arts at New York University , where he directed the acting program in the late 1970s and early 1980s. From 1983 he was director of the theater program at Community College of New York and taught at Dartmouth, Emerson and Williams colleges. He published his poems in various magazines and in the three volumes of poetry Them: Poems 1999–2002 . The General Is Asked His Opinion and Other Sad Songs 2002-2005 and Thin Snow: Poems 2006-2008 . From 1992 he lived in Williamstown.
