Omer Meir Wellber (born October 23, 1981 in Be'er Scheva , Israel ) is an Israeli conductor.

Omer Meir Wellber has been the Semperoper's principal guest conductor since September 2018 . He was a frequent guest conductor at the Israeli Opera and has been music director of the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra, created in 1991 for the integration of Jewish emigrants in Israel, since 2009. From 2010 to 2014 he was Lorin Maazel's successor as General Music Director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. Wellber also appears regularly at the opera houses in Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Venice, Milan and Verona.

Omer Meir Wellber started playing the piano , accordion and violin at the age of five . Since he was also interested in composition, he began taking lessons from Tania Taler from the age of ten. Michael Wolpe then became his teacher until 2004. In 1999 he graduated from the Be'er Sheva Conservatory. Since then his works have been performed by orchestras and ensembles both in Israel and abroad and have been broadcast on the radio. Wellber then studied on a scholarship from the American-Israel Cultural Foundation from 2000 to 2008 at the Jerusalem Music Academy with Eugene Zirlin and in the Mendi Rodan program.

During this time he already appeared with the Israeli Sinfonietta, the Israel Chamber Orchestra , the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra , the Haifa Symphony Orchestra and the Rishon Le'Zion Symphony Orchestra and conducted around ten world premieres of Israeli and modern music. His suite for string orchestra, bassoon and clarinet, his piano concerto No. 1 and his mandolin concerto received their first performances. Chamber music works have premiered by the Kaprisma Ensemble (Music for Ten Instruments), the Musica Nuova Ensemble (oboe quintet The Last Leaf) and the Amber Trio (Piano Trio and Accordion). In December 2004 Wellber conducted the world premiere of his viola concerto with the Israel Chamber Orchestra, which he had written for Amichai Grosz of the Jerusalem Quartet.

Wellber has been conducting regularly at the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv since 2005. In February 2007 Wellber conducted a gala concert in Beijing with the Beijing Philharmonic Orchestra. Shortly thereafter, he made his debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra . In October 2008, Verdi's “Aida” followed at the Teatro Verdi in Padova - for which it was recognized by the Italian magazine Classic Voice as one of the new artistic discoveries of 2008.

Between 2008 and 2010 he assisted Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden and at the Teatro alla Scala . He conducted “Aida” during the Scala guest performance at the Israel Opera. This was followed by Bizet's "Carmen" at the Berlin State Opera, his first concert at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, a concert at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Strauss' "Salome" as a substitute for Seiji Ozawa at the Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto, a new production von Strauss' "Daphne" at the Semperoper Dresden, Puccini's "Tosca" at the Berlin State Opera and symphony concerts in Verona and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice.

Wellber was entrusted by the Wiener Festwochen with the direction of Verdi's trilogia popolare - "Rigoletto" (2011), "La Traviata" (2012) and "Il Trovatore" (2013) - as part of a three-year project. Further conductors included "Tosca" and "Aida" at Scala, "La traviata" at the Berlin State Opera, "Carmen" and "Elisir d'amore" in Venice, "La traviata" at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Verdi's "Macbeth" in Verona and "Otello" in Tel Aviv as well as various symphony concerts with the Orchester de Paris , the Filarmonica della Scala, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , the orchestra of the RAI Turin, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra . In June 2013 he directed the anniversary Aida in the Arena di Verona in a production by La Fura dels Baus .

In November 2016 he conducted the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden at the world premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina's oratorio About Love and Hate . In March 2017 he directed the premiere of Giordano's Andrea Chenier at the Bavarian State Opera, where he had already conducted the new production of Mefistofele in 2015 . His engagements at the Semperoper in 2017 included a. conducting the Mozart / Da Ponte cycle ' Così fan tutte , Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni as part of the one-off Mozart Days. This Mozart / Da Ponte cycle was created between 2014 and 2016 as three new productions (directed by Andreas Kriegenburg and Johannes Erath), each under the direction of Omer Meir Wellber. In January of the same year he conducted Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Teatro La Fenice . In the 2017/18 season, Wellber a. a. with the BBC Philharmonic, the SWR Symphony Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. After further debuts, he was re-invited to the Orchester National de Lyon, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the Gewandhausorchester zu Leipzig. At the Bavarian State Opera he conducted the premiere of Verdi's Les Vêpres siciliennes . In summer 2018 he conducted the festival premiere of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the Glyndebourne Festival, where he made his debut in 2014 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the production of Eugen Onegin .

In 2018 Omer Meir Wellber made his debut at the Lucerne Festival with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In October 2018 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York with performances of Bizet's Carmen . For the first time, Omer Meir Wellber stood in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in the 2018/19 season and conducted concerts with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, etc. a. at the Leipzig Bach Festival 2019. As the first guest conductor of the Semperoper Dresden, he took over the direction of the new production of Verdi's Nabucco in May 2019 .
