Ruth Achlama

Ruth Achlama (born Renate Böteführ October 29, 1945 in Quedlinburg ) is a German - Israeli translator .

Life

Renate Böteführ grew up in Mannheim . After breaking up in 1963/64 as an exchange student in the United States stopped and their in Mannheim in 1965 matriculation examination had taken, studied it from 1965 to 1969 jurisprudence at the University of Heidelberg . From 1969 to 1973 she completed her legal clerkship , temporarily with a lawyer in Tel-Aviv . From 1973 to 1974 she studied Jewish studies at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati ( Ohio). In 1974 she married the Israeli chemist Abraham Achlama and emigrated with him to Israel .

In Israel Achlama initially worked as a proofreader for the German-language newspaper Israel-Nachrichten . She later graduated from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem with a degree in library science . After graduating, she worked as a librarian in the library of the Agricultural Faculty of the Hebrew University in Rehovot . She has been a full-time freelance translator since 1979 . Achlama, who has both Israeli and German citizenship , lives in Tel Aviv .

After initially translating mainly non-fiction books , the focus of Achlama's work is now on the translation of fictional works from Hebrew into German. The authors she has translated include a. Abraham B. Yehoshua , Amos Oz, and Meir Shalev .

Achlama is a member of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ.

Honors

• From 1993 to 1995 Achlama was the sponsor of the Hieronymusring , founded by the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works, VdÜ . She passed this challenge on to Hartmut Fähndrich
• In 1995 she received the Paul Celan Prize , especially for her translations of the works of Amos Oz .
• In 2015 she was awarded the German-Hebrew Translation Prize, which was awarded for the first time.
• In 2019, Achlama received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
