Hartmut Fähndrich

Hartmut Fähndrich (born October 14, 1944 in Tübingen ) is a German translator from Arabic into German.

Life

From 1966 he studied Semitic studies , Islamic studies and philosophy in Tübingen, Münster and Los Angeles . He has lived in Switzerland since 1978 and taught Arabic and Islamic cultural history at the ETH Zurich until he was 70 . He began his career as a translator of literary works in the 1980s with the novels of the Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani. From 1984 to 2010 he was editor of the Arabic literature series at the Swiss Lenos Verlag . In 1990 he was a founding member and until 1996 President of the Swiss Society for the Middle East and Islamic Cultures .

Because of his merits in translating Arabic literature into German for 40 years , including 40 novels alone, he received numerous awards, including the Hieronymusring from 1995–1997 from the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , a traveling award that Fähndrich passed on to Stefanie Schäfer . He was also awarded the Arab League's translation prize in 2004 , the recognition prize of the Great Literature Prize of the Canton of Bern in 2005 and the special translation prize of the Swiss literary prizes in 2016 .
