Omophron variegatum is a species of ground beetle from the subfamily Omophroninae and lives in the western Mediterranean region.

features

Adults of the species are about 7.5 to just under nine millimeters long and just under four to a good five millimeters wide. The body outline is elongated oval and quite closed, between the rear edge of the pronotum and the base of the wing covers there is a weak, obtuse-angled heel. The elytra are a little wider than the pronotum. The underside of the body and the legs are monochrome yellow-brown, the upper side has a drawing of dark, more or less greenish, metallic, shiny drawing elements on a yellow-brown background, which differ noticeably between the subspecies. Typically, the wing covers have three bands of alternating light and dark metallic green spots, resulting in a cube drawing.

The mandibles are noticeably elongated at the head , their outer edges have a wedge-shaped widening. The elytra (wing cover) have 14 distinct, deeply incised stripes, in between they are lightly dotted. The surface of the pronotum is finely puckered and roughly dotted on the front and rear edges, its base is without an impression. The legs are very long, the wings only about one and a half times as long as the hind tarsi . On the abdomen, neither the base of the first nor the second sternite is noticeably dotted.

Subspecies

A distinction is made between four subspecies, which essentially differ in the dark drawing on the upper side.

  • Omophron variegatum variegatum Olivier , 1811. The pronotum has a three-part drawing consisting of a central stripe and two shorter lateral stripes. The parting bears a drawing of two spots that converge at the rear edge. Distribution: Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal).
  • Omophron variegatum sardoum Reitter , 1907. Pronotum drawing as in the nominate form . The dark markings on the wing coverts are more extensive, the metallic sheen more clearly pronounced. Vertex drawing as with variegatum . Distribution: Endemic to Sardinia .
  • Omophron variegatum boiteli Alluaud , 1935. Drawing on the pronotum and on the vertex as in the nominate form, but mostly noticeably paler. The drawing on the wing covers is usually noticeably reduced, only consisting of small, dark longitudinal stripes without contact to one another, as with the other subspecies, a dark line is mostly preserved along the wing cover seam. The intervals between the stripes on the elytra are smooth. Distribution: Endemic to eastern Tunisia , from the Bizerta area .
  • Omophron variegatum seurati Alluaud , 1935. The drawing on the elytra has merged at the base and in the middle to form clear, irregularly delimited transverse bands. The drawing on the vertex is partially reduced and consists of two points without any connection to each other. Distribution: Endemic to western Tunisia, from Ouchtata near Tabarqa .

Systematics

Omophron variegatum is a type of the subgenus Phrator , which some taxonomists also regard as an independent genus . In this case the species should be called Phrator variegatum .

Ecology and way of life

As far as is known, the species lives in and on moist, vegetation-free sand on the banks of water, as is typical of the genus. Almost nothing else is known about their ecology.
