On the Air - Voll auf Sendung (Original title: On the Air ) is an American television series from 1992, developed by David Lynch and Mark Frost . It can be assigned to the genres of comedy and slapstick . The first episode was broadcast on the US TV station ABC on June 20, 1992, the first German dubbed version on August 11, 1995 on RTL II . The series consists of seven episodes, only three of which were shown on US television. Then the series was canceled.

content

The plot of the series is set in 1957. The US TV station ZBC (Zoblotnick Broadcasting Corporation) is broadcasting The Lester Guy Show for the first time . The premiere goes completely under: The main camera falls over and sends an image tilted by 90 degrees, Lester Guy gets tangled in some cables and the supporting actress Betty Hudson suddenly becomes the main character.

Due to its technical errors and mishaps in terms of content, however, the show was a surprise success, not least thanks to the improvising Betty Hudson. Lester becomes jealous and tries everything to stop Betty's rising popularity. But his various attempts fail miserably.

background

After the successful mystery television series Twin Peaks , ABC entered into a new collaboration with the Lynch / Frost team. This time it should be a comedy. Both had written the script for the first episode in late 1990. Lynch and Frost took turns writing the rest of the scripts with Robert Engels . On June 20, 1992, the first episode could be broadcast on US television. Directed by David Lynch personally. The other episodes were directed by Jonathan Sanger, Lesli Linka Glatter , Jack Fisk and Betty Thomas .

Bad ratings and reviews forced ABC to cancel the series after the third episode. Frost blamed the poor airtime and “ American audiences ' lack of sense of bizarre humor ”.

In Germany, On the Air - Voll was broadcast three times completely: twice on RTL II from August to September 1995 and from January 1996 to December 1997, once on Premiere Comedy in June 2001.
