action

Truelove gives his sweetheart Miss Tilly a present analogous to the song The Twelve Days of Christmas . On the first day, she receives a partridge in a small pear tree and puts the gift on her living room table. She looks lovingly at the picture of her lover and continues stitching on a picture that shows Truelove. On the second day she receives two lovebirds and another partridge in a pear tree and is initially confused, but the joy prevails. Her butler does the same. On the third day, three French chickens and again two pigeons and a partridge in the pear tree join the existing animals that are flying around the room. The butler sees it positively and begins to collect the eggs from the chickens, even if one bursts on his head. On the fourth day, Truelove was already bringing four cages, one of which contained four canaries. Miss Tilly is getting more and more nervous, especially as the space in the house is getting more and more cramped. On the fifth day, Truelove presented her with five rings woven into a chain. Miss Tilly is delighted, but the enthusiasm is clouded by the four cages with birds that have been added. She slams the door indignantly.

On the sixth day, the four animal cages are followed by another with six geese and the box with the five rings, which Miss Tilly still enjoys. On the seventh day, she will again receive the rings and the animals she already knows. In addition, seven choirboys move in with her and sing. On the eighth day the already known gifts are delivered, whereby the first group of boys begins to quarrel with the second. There are now eight maids who milk eight cows. Again the five rings lift the mood. On the ninth day, the butler can no longer control the excess eggs. In addition to the existing chickens, there are numerous hatched chicks. Truelove delivers the well-known gifts, other groups of children and maidservants as well as nine dancers. Miss Tilly is desperate. Ten morris dancers, eleven pipe players, and finally, to Miss Tilly's horror, twelve drummers who barely come into the house with their big drums. Miss Tilly takes refuge on the roof. Truelove appears in a hot air balloon and gives her the last five rings outstanding. Miss Tilly refuses it at first, but then lets it slip on her finger. While the house is in chaos, the butler packs his things and flees. He is hit by the sandbag that Truelove and Miss Tilly throw from the balloon so that they can float away into the sky.

production

On the Twelfth Day is a humorous adaptation of the Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas , with the singing swans of the original being transformed into choirboys. The stanzas are sung in the film, and the gifts are always listed when they are handed over by Truelove. The film does not contain any dialogues. Alix Stone created the costumes and Ronald Searle designed the film .

Awards

On the Twelfth Day was nominated for an Oscar in 1956 in the Best Short Film (Two-Reel) category. He also received a BAFTA nomination (Special Award) in 1957 .
