The Onegabusen ( Russian Онежская губа / Oneschskaja guba or Онежский залив / Oneschski saliw , also Onegabucht ) is a bay of the White Sea in northwestern Russia .

geography

The Onegabusen is next to the Dwinabusen , the Mesenbusen and the Kandalakscha Bay one of the four big bays of the White Sea and at the same time the southernmost of these bays. The bosom stretches from the delta of the river Onega , near the eponymous city Onega , to the Solovetsky Islands located in it . In the east, the Onega Bay is bounded by the Onega Peninsula . In the 185 kilometers long and between 50 and 100 kilometers wide bosom there are numerous small islands. In addition to the Solovetsky Islands, which are the largest islands of the Onegabusa, the islands of Myagostrov ( Мягостров ), Chedostrov ( Хедостров ) and Kondostrov ( Кондостров ) belong to the largest islands in the bay. The island of Kondostrov is surrounded by other small islands called the Sumsky archipelago ( Сумские шхеры ). In addition, there is the Ki island in Onegabusen , which is known for its monastery complex.

To the west of the Onegabusen near the city of Belomorsk is the northern end of the White Sea-Baltic Sea Canal , which connects the White Sea with Lake Onega and is part of the White Sea-Baltic Sea waterway to Saint Petersburg . In addition to the Onega, the large rivers Kem (near the town of Kem ) and Vyg (near Belomorsk) also flow into the Onega Bay.

The average depth of the Onegabusen is 16 meters and the maximum is 36 meters. The tidal range is up to 2.72 meters. In winter, the Onegabusen freezes over for six months (185 days).

At the administrative level, the Onegabuse belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Republic of Karelia . The eastern section of the coast of the bosom, which includes the southwest of the Onega Peninsula, is known as Oneschski bereg ( Онежский берег ) and is located in Onega Rajon . This section is followed by the coastal section of Lyamezki bereg ( Лямецкий берег ) north of the village of Ljamza, which belongs to the Onega district . This area of the Onegabusen belongs to the far north of the Primorsk Rajon . Both coastlines are part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast. The southwestern part of the coast of Onegabusen is called Pomorski bereg ( Поморский берег ) and belongs to the Kem Rajon (in the north) and Belomorsk Rajon (in the south) of the Republic of Karelia.
