Onegai Teacher ( Japanese お ね が い ☆ テ ィ ー チ ャ ー , Onegai Tīchā ), in English-speaking countries as Please Teacher! known, is his - anime and - manga from 2001. It is about a boy who falls into a coma-like state due to a rare illness . He himself calls this state “standstill”. He gets into this, among other things, through emotional fluctuations that occur especially in the relationship with his extraterrestrial teacher, who is also his wife. In 2003, the anime offshoot Onegai Twins was released .

action

Before the series begins, a 15-year-old boy who goes by the name Kei in the series and is the main character of the series falls into a "standstill". This lasts 3 years. After he wakes up again, he leaves home to avoid the social problems that would arise due to this three-year time difference. He moves in with his uncle, a doctor, and his wife. He keeps the time difference a secret from his new friends and tries to start a new life there. During the first acts of the plot, he meets a handsome semi-alien person who is observing Earth and who - as it turns out later - becomes his teacher, Mizuho Kazami. Both are found one day in a school closet. Due to some misunderstandings, the two are forced to marry in order not to have to leave school and Mizuho's identity is not exposed. So they move in together and during all of the chaos their friends and relatives are about to create in their home, they are slowly beginning to really fall in love with each other.

scene of action

The story takes place - in both the manga and the anime itself, although it is not named - on Lake Kizaki , which is located on the main island of Honshu in Nagano Prefecture in Japan . This can be seen especially in the anime at the stops of the local rail line, at place names like Inao . In the novel, the school is referred to as the Kizaki Prefectural High School.

continuation

The sequel to Onegai Teacher was born due to the great success that the series enjoyed internationally. It is called Onegai Twins and contains the same characters as its predecessor. However, the series is based on a completely new plot.

reception

Despite the crazy idea, reminiscent of similar already known crazy love stories, Newtype USA describes the anime as "surprisingly good". Although the reason for this is difficult to describe, the series is recommended for the enjoyment of romantic comedies. The German manga scene also writes that the story is less hackneyed than it initially appears, because it focuses heavily on relationships and credible character development. Animation and music were also successful.

Jason Thompson describes the manga as unrealistic, boring and with “listlessly applied science fiction elements”. The protagonist is unusually grumpy and bitter, the drawings seem hasty and arbitrary.
